BAR HARBOR — An alleged waste spill from a cruise ship tied up to the town pier on July 19 is under investigation by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection. A DVD of the event, showing discolored water around the 100-passenger Independence, was sent to the agency on July 23, harbormaster Charlie Phippen said. Mr. Phippen also has requested an explanation from the captain of the ship. “I want to know that it’s not going to happen again,” he said. Water samples showed a high bacteriological count in the area around the ship, while water around the town beach nearby was not affected.
