| Meetings on Wind Power, Dam Scheduled in Orland |

ORLAND — Residents can weigh in on the fate of the Orland River Dam and on a possible wind power moratorium in upcoming meetings. On March 24, there will be a public hearing to discuss a possible wind power moratorium in town. A moratorium would temporarily suspend consideration of any new wind power projects, while officials review what rules are necessary to regulate such projects. Selectman Wayne Ames said there is nothing on the books to regulate wind turbines at this time. A special town meeting on the topic will be held the following day, March 25. A hearing April 29 will solicit resident input about the Orland River Dam. Verso Paper Corp. has indicated it would like to abandon the property, which serves no purpose to the Bucksport mill. The dam has been offered free to the town. The selectmen have balked at the possibility, citing liability concerns should the dam need repairs in the future. Residents will vote on the matter at Town Meeting. The hearings and special town meeting are all tentatively scheduled for 7 p.m. at the town office.
