SULLIVAN — Sumner Memorial High School was today designated one of the 10 lowest-performing schools in Maine. The 10 schools could collectively be eligible for as much as $11 million in federal money under President Obama’s School Turnaround Grants program. Superintendent Bill Webster of Regional School Unit 24 (RSU 24), which includes the town of Sullivan and Sumner High, said he received a telephone call today from the state Department of Education notifying him that Sumner was on the list. Webster said the state plans to make a more detailed announcement next week. School performance was measured using a formula that considered reading and math test scores over the past three years and the school’s eligibility for Title I funds. Title I funds are given to schools that serve students from low-income families. For more education news, pick up a copy of The Ellsworth American.
