TRENTON — The SPCA of Hancock County recently celebrated the milestone of its 600th companion animal adoption when Jax, a Labrador retriever mix, found a forever home with Kaili Irvin.
Since opening its doors in Trenton in January 2007, the SPCA of Hancock County has cared for a variety of animals including adult cats and dogs, kittens that required bottle feeding, pregnant cats that gave birth at the shelter, and even rabbits and ferrets. “We see all kinds of animals come through our doors,” said Doug Radziewicz, the SPCA’s executive director. “Some are surrendered by people who can no longer care for them while others are strays never claimed by their guardians. Some are happy and healthy, but others are undernourished, flea infested, injured, or in need of surgery. All are, for whatever reason, without a home.” At the shelter, these animals are cared for, neutered or spayed, wormed, vaccinated and tested and placed up for adoption with the hope that a caring and responsible person will come along and adopt them. According to Mr. Radziewicz, because many shelter animals have suffered neglect or abuse at some time in their lives, the staff at the SPCA takes special care in finding the best match between animal and guardian. As for Jax and Kaili, says Mr. Radziewicz, “It was a wonderful match and we’re confident they will enjoy a happy life together filled with memories that last a lifetime. Pets offer unconditional love and all they ask for in return is safety, comfort, protection, devotion and of course…love. We thank each and every one of our adopters and look forward to matching and placing the next 600 into loving, safe, and forever homes!” The SPCA of Hancock County is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and protecting animals through community education and outreach while providing comfort and care for animals until they are placed in responsible and loving homes.
