BAR HARBOR — With an estimated price tag of $35,000, a new drainage system for the elevator shaft at Conners-Emerson Elementary School is the biggest item in the capital improvement portion of the school’s proposed $5.28 million budget for next fiscal year.

The elevator is in the Emerson building. The pit at the base of the shaft is below the water table, and the existing pump system that is supposed to keep the water at an acceptable level doesn’t work very well, according to principal Barbara Neilly.

“The state says we have to fix it or they won’t inspect the elevator,” she said. “We’ve got to have it in service because we have a student who needs it.”

The new drainage system will connect the elevator pit to the town’s sewer system. Ms. Neilly said it isn’t known how much work that will involve or exactly how expensive it will be.
