SOUTHWEST HARBOR — Pemetic Elementary School principal Dianne Helprin was going through her normal routine Tuesday when she received a surprise phone call from the Maine Principals’ Association saying she had been named Maine’s Principal of the Year.

“It hasn’t even sunk in yet; I’m still in shock,” she said.

Ms. Helprin, who has been principal of the K-8 school since the fall of 2002, had no idea that she was even in the running.

School superintendent Rob Liebow said Ms. Helprin is representative of the finest principals in Maine.

“She is a true leader in her school,” Mr. Liebow said. “The school, the teachers, staff and kids reflect her leadership in their everyday performance and share in this award.”
