No Shipwrecks Found During Harbor Survey

TREMONT — A survey crew searching Monday for century-old shipwrecks in the area of the federal Bass Harbor dredging project came up empty-handed, clearing the way for the project to move forward unimpeded.

A crew from Ocean Surveys, Inc. of Old Saybrook, Conn. and marine archeologist David Robinson of Fathom Research, LLC of New Bedford, Mass. spent three hours scanning a 5.6-acre area of the harbor looking for the wrecks of the Wreath and the Pearl. The Maine Historic Preservation Commission required the survey to ensure that the dredging would not disturb any historic shipwrecks.

Speaking at the town wharf in Bernard Monday afternoon, Mr. Robinson said they found no indication of any shipwrecks in the area surveyed. But, before a final report can be made, data from the three sensing devices aboard the survey boat must be compiled and studied.
