GOULDSBORO — Hoping a small mountain of milk cartons is worth 1,000 words, recycling advocates last week helped raise the awareness of Peninsula School students about what can be converted to other uses. “We took all of the items the school can recycle out of the waste stream for one week and had it on display in the cafeteria,” said Becky O’Keefe, a gardener and recycling advocate. The cafeteria collection included a pyramid made of 772 milk cartons, which the children rinsed and stacked themselves; three large bags of mixed paper; 16 large cans from the kitchen; a 3-foot-by-3-foot stack of cardboard and other recyclables. The project was timed to coincide with Maine Recycles Week and included a curriculum for each grade. In addition, each class also was responsible for collecting recycling around the school, from the lunchroom and kitchen to the classrooms and offices.
