BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island Regional School System (MDI RSS) board voted unanimously Tuesday night to recommend that all of the schools in the system adopt the Mount Desert Elementary School’s new, stricter resident admission policy. The Mount Desert school committee adopted the policy in April in response to what committee chairman Heather Jones described as “glaring cases where people who didn’t live in the town of Mount Desert were driving their children in. “They were not paying tuition or (property) taxes,” she said. “In some cases, they were renting places in the town, but they didn’t actually live there.” The new policy requires “adequate proof of residency” before a child is admitted. The policy defines residence as “the place where the family eats, sleeps, relaxes and plays.” For more education news, pick up a copy of the Mount Desert Islander.
