BAR HARBOR — Major sections of the roof at Mount Desert Island High School are in urgent need of replacement. Officials estimate that doing all the repairs this fall could cost in the neighborhood of $900,000. Phasing the work in over eight years, however could increase that cost to nearly $1.5 million. According to Ed Bonville, chairman of the MDI High Board of Trustees, a total of 55,500 square feet of flat rubber roof, covering approximately half the school, is at the end of its projected life and needs to be replaced. Seams are coming apart and snow loads are creating places for water to seep into the building. “They are definitely showing their age,” he said in an interview on Monday. The full engineering report on the repairs can be found online at the Union 98 website at www.u98k12.me.us. For more education news, pick up a copy of the Mount Desert Islander.
